I believe that you bravely and effectively handled the situation that you got yourself in. However, you did show some irresponsibility to begin with, as you are way too young for this type of situation. Right now in your life, your job is to focus on school, your grades and your future. Getting pregnant is merely a distraction from your job as a student. It creates unnecessary tension between you and your classmates. However, it does seem that you made the best decision possible, as you straightened out your priorities in a responsible way.
In modern day society, there is some tension between pro life and pro choice supporters. Going to the abortion clinic must not have been easy for you, as you could have gained hate for that. However, I am glad that you made the right decision, the decision that was right for you. While getting an abortion would be the closest thing to the return of your “normal life,” it appears that you were not up for it. That’s OK, there’s always plan b, right?
You did the right thing by going to your parents. Their job is to support you no, matter what you are dealing with. Sure, they may be disappointed, but at least you have nothing to hide. You messed up since you were not ready to start a family. However, your parents supported you in the adoption process.
In general, abortion is an option for many women, but it is not the ethical one. Birth control is a more suitable option. Or, alternatively, the parent can raise the child to term, then put the baby up for adoption, as you did. This is more favorable to abortion, but it can cause an awkward situation, as the parent may get too attached to the child. Or when the child finds out the whole truth that could be devastating as well.
As decided in Roe v. Wade, a woman has the right to privacy under the 14th amendment. This is the current position on the federal law. However, women should be made aware of the consequences of their cations before the procedure, and be given time to think about their decision and the implications and repercussions it could have on their future. One of the most frustrating things is that women who abort babies do so willingly, and sometimes without much reflection. However, there are some individuals who cannot get pregnant. The fact that some “waste” viable babies is horrendous. The government should step in to set more defined policies on the issue.
When it comes down to it, it is the woman’s choice to decide what is best for her current life status. As long as it is legal and well thought out, I am not opposed to that. Juno, your decision was your decision. You did what you thought was best. It would have been nice, however, to get more support from Paul. He should have been there more for you, as he was half of your mess. I am not necessarily proud of your actions, but I am compassionate towards you for your maturity and respect in going through with the adoption plan.
